Segmental Retaining Wall in Salem, MA

Posted in Masonry, Pavers, Uncategorized, Winter Landscape at 7:41 AM by Administrator

We built a segmental retaining wall alongside of this Salem family’s garage.  The house is located at the corner of two streets, thus the family did not want to see the concrete wall of the garage/house from the road.  Because the natural grade of the area was sloping away from the house, we built this segmental retaining wall which allows for the plants to remain (they were there, but the old wall had stopped working) and installed a small drainage system which has helped keep the runoff from the gutter running onto the driveway.  We found this important, because in prior years there would be ice alongside the side of the driveway.

Lights built into a natural stone wall – another type

Posted in Landscape Lights, Masonry, Pavers, Uncategorized, Winter Landscape at 7:03 AM by Administrator

Last week, we, Artistic Landscapes LLC, highlighted the type of light that we utilized to illuminate the walkway for a family in Southborough.  This week, we are going to show the type of fixture that we utilized in illuminating the patio and taller retaining wall.   These lights were also mortared directly into the natural stone wall as we build it.

These lights were installed further above the patio than the lights that illuminated the walkway, thus we selected a light fixture that keeps the source of the light hidden.  We found this to be important as the family plans to have many dinners and get togethers on their new patio and we did not want them or their guests to get ‘blinded’ by the light that is in the walls.  These light fixtures utilize LED lightbulbs and provide sufficient ambient light towards the center of the patio and clearly marks where the retaining wall is located.

Granite Steps Installed

Posted in Landscape Lights, Masonry, Pavers, Uncategorized, Winter Landscape at 6:42 AM by Administrator

We needed several steps to allow for easy access from the patio to the backyard, thus we built a staircase.  The staircase is made up of natural stone walls (returns) that are terraced so that you will not feel like you are trapped as you descend the steps and several solid granite steps.  These steps were installed so that they are built into the wall and are an extension of the patio.

Lights built into a natural stone wall

Posted in Landscape Lights, Masonry, Pavers, Uncategorized, Winter Landscape at 7:57 AM by Administrator

We, Artistic Landscapes LLC, have used a variety of methods to illuminate stonework.  Depending on the situation and the amount of light that is desired and whether or not the light fixture should be seen, we may cast the light from a directional light or an area light, but we also mortar light fixtures directly into a natural stone wall as we build the wall.

For this family, we installed lights that have face plates on the front as our goal is to get some of the light across the 4′ wide walkway (the light fixtures are installed within 12″ of the walkway).  By utilizing this type of fixture, the fixture will not be in the way during snow removal and the light from the LED lightbulbs provide sufficient light across the walkway that leads to the primary entrance for this family.

Natural Stone Wall and Patio in Southborough, MA

The patio is lit with 14 low voltage lights that Artistic Landscapes mortared into the natural stone retaining wall while the walkway is illuminated with 3 low voltage lights.  We utilized two different types of light fixtures as the goal of lights around the patio is different than the goal of the lights that illuminated the walkway.

Natural stone wall and Patio ready for a warm night

Posted in Landscape Lights, Masonry, Pavers, Uncategorized, Winter Landscape at 4:26 PM by Administrator

This family has a portable heater so that they will be able to begin using their new patio as soon as we have another night when the temperatures are in the 50s.  Pretty exciting to see the patio ready for appetizers or drinks.

Natural Stone Wall and Patio in Southborough, MA

The natural stone wall was built to appear to be dry laid (this means minimal mortar is visible on the front of the wall).  As such extensive chiseling was performed on most stones, but all of the walls look similar and were built to last a lifetime (hopefully more).  During 2014, we will be planting between the two walls and planting along the outside of the wall which will compliment the beauty of the stonework.

This patio is in an area where the landscape slopes away from the house pretty dramatically.  Thus, Artistic Landscapes installed 6 granite steps to allow people to move from the patio to the backyard.  These steps were integrated directly into the patio and retaining wall, so that the walls of the steps are connected to the retaining wall that is supporting the patio.

Artistic Landscapes of Georgetown, MA has installed a slab of granite that is 8′ x 2′ as the step into the house for this family.  As we built the stone retaining wall, we backfilled the space between the house and the stone wall with crushed stone.  This crushed stone will serve as the base for a paver patio.
