Landscape Lights in Lexington

Posted in Landscape Lights, Plants, Pruning, Uncategorized, Winter Landscape at 6:21 AM by Administrator

We designed this landscape lighting system so that both walkways that lead to the front door will be illuminated as well as the mature plantings.  We utilized four types of light fixtures in this front yard to ensure that we achieved the look that this family wanted.  The path lights were located in positions to ensure that the specimen tree that is between the two walkways and the driveway would be fully illuminated from other fixtures these path lights would provide the necessary light on the steps and walkway.  Other fixtures are used to uplight other mature plantings.  To help make the front yard seem bigger, we installed a couple of lights up in a tree.  These tree lights illuminate the lawn area as well as the front of the shrubs.  By having these areas lit, we are able to provide a much greater sense of depth to this property.

Reclaimed Granite Steps in Brighton

Posted in Masonry, Pavers, Uncategorized, Winter Landscape at 6:46 AM by Administrator

We installed these 7 reclaimed granite steps for a family in Brighton, MA so that they will have access to their front yard.  These steps enable them to access their front yard from the side of their house that is full of vegetable and herb gardens.  At the bottom of the steps is a path of natural stepping stones that allows them access to the entire front yard without stepping on future plants.

Accent rows around walkways and patios

Posted in Masonry, Pavers, Uncategorized, Winter Landscape at 10:43 AM by Administrator

The question around whether you should include accent rows around your walkway and/or patio remains.  Accent rows can serve as a are very effective border and can make transitioning from the main area of pavers to the edge of the walkway and/or patio more aesthetically pleasing for many people.  There continues to be many ways of creating these borders.  During 2014, we utilized many different styles of pavers and accent themes.  Our decisions were primarily based on the clients’ goals followed by the size of the walkway and/or patio as we do not want to have the accent rows become a large part of your project.

The following pictures show many of the styles that we recently used for our borders and accent rows.  This picture shows 2 accent rows that were installed within a patio that is followed by a border row of the same stones that is in the body of the patio.  This approach worked for this family as they liked having the large stones for the majority of their patio.

Accent rows on a patio

For this family, we installed 3 accent rows as the border.  The border was built with 1 style of paver, but we used 2 different sizes to help transition from the large pavers that were used in the main part of the patio to the edge.  We feel that by transitioning to smaller pavers along the edge of the patio, the smaller pavers help make this fairly small yard feel larger.

For this family, we installed 2 accent rows as the border.  Both accent rows were from pavers that were the same color and size, but in a contrasting color to the body of the patio.

For this family, we installed an accent row using the same paver as the body of the walkway, but this border row has the paver installed at an opposite angle from the main part of the walkway.

Paeonia (Peony) with Pink Flowers

Posted in Landscape Lights, Masonry, Plants, Pruning, Uncategorized, Winter Landscape at 6:38 AM by Administrator

We planted this Paeonia x ITOH ‘Keik0’ in 2012 for a family in Marblehead and it continues to get better each year.  This plant was full of blooms and ready to open and reward the family with many beautiful blooms while not collapsing the plant.  The ITOH type peony does not require a cage to hold up the branches, thus I think it is even better than a normal peony.

Walkway in Manchester, MA

Posted in Masonry, Pavers, Uncategorized, Winter Landscape at 6:48 AM by Administrator

We, Artistic Landscapes, built this paver walkway that is outlined with cobblestones for a family in Manchester, MA.  This walkway enables people to get from the driveway onto the back deck and main outdoor living space.  The downspout from the gutters is now in a solid 4″ drainage pipe that allows water from the roof to be dispersed in the lawn area and a dry well rather than emptying right next to the foundation of the garage.

Deutzia ‘Chardonnay Pearls’

Posted in Landscape Lights, Plants, Pruning, Uncategorized, Winter Landscape at 6:03 AM by Administrator

We planted this beautiful Deutzia ‘Chardonnay Pearls’ in Marblehead during the summer of 2012 and took this picture in late Spring of 2014.  The yellow-like foliage is attractive for many months, yet it is even more impressive when it is covered in these white flowers.  This variety of Deutzia does not require much pruning to stay small (I expect this plant to always be less than 3′ tall and less than 5′ wide).

Marblehead natural stone wall and flagstone walkway 2 years later

Posted in Landscape Lights, Masonry, Pavers, Plants, Uncategorized, Winter Landscape at 6:53 AM by Administrator

We built this natural stone retaining wall and flagstone walkway for this Marblehead family in 2012.  The walkway is illuminated with path lights and the plants are highlighted with other lights that were installed within the mulched beds as part of the landscape lighting system that is focused on the front of the house.  The plants are watered by a drip irrigation system while the lawn is watered by rotary irrigation heads.  The wall and walkway are doing well and avoid having too much water/rain backup against them as we installed an in-ground drainage system.
