Retaining Wall in Byfield

Posted in Masonry, Pavers, Uncategorized at 6:13 AM by Administrator

The front yard of this Byfield property slopes towards the house and based on some mature trees and existing grades, this family was unable to grow a lawn in an area by the front corner of the house.  Thus, we were hired to design and build this segmental retaining wall so that we could change the grade of this area and stop erosion from occurring.  After building the wall, the homeowners’ decided that a natural feeling peastone walkway was ideal as this creates a visual break between the front yard and the side hill.

Waterfalls and Pond in Groveland

Posted in Landscape Lights, Masonry, Plants, Uncategorized, Winter Landscape at 6:20 AM by Administrator

We designed and built this pond with 4 waterfalls into the side of a hill in Groveland.  By choosing this location, the waterfalls are able to be seen from 1/4 mile away as there is a street directly lined up with the waterfalls as well as from the family room of their home.  We built the waterfalls and pond with stones and boulders and ‘planted’ some of their stones away from the waterfall path so that it helps the waterfall look more natural.  Landscape lights have been strategically located in and around the pond so that the flow of water is visible even at night.  During 2016, we expect to plant around the waterfalls and pond as well as inside the pond.  Fish will begin making this pond their home later this Spring.

Backyard Patio for a North Andover family

Posted in Masonry, Pavers, Uncategorized at 7:05 AM by Administrator

We built this backyard patio utilizing Unilock pavers and we connected the patio to the existing walkway after listening to what the homeowners’ wanted to accomplish.  Due to the grade changes in the backyard, we decided to slope the connecting walkway down to the patio so that we could build the patio with a minimal slope and there would be no need for a retaining wall.  After listening to our clients’ wishes, we knew they wanted a little more flair in their patio, thus we built the patio to have a contrasting accent row around the whole patio.

Firepit

We built this firepit utilizing stones manufactured by Techo-Bloc so that the firepit is within the patio and everyone can sit around while staying on the paver patio.  The bottom of the firepit is finished with fire rated bricks while the interior is lined with a steel ring so that the heat from the fire will not crack the stones.

Patio and Sitting Wall in Groveland

Posted in Masonry, Pavers, Uncategorized at 6:39 AM by Administrator

We built this patio and sitting wall so that this Groveland homeowner could entertain and enjoy his yard.  The sitting wall provides the extra seating that will be needed from time to time and helps us define his finished living area of his yard from the natural growth that is on the hill.

Paver Patio in their Needham Backyard

Posted in Masonry, Pavers, Uncategorized at 6:45 AM by Administrator

After listening to our client’s goals, we knew we needed to create a patio that had a dining area and looked great from their kitchen as well as complemented the existing landscaping.  Understanding those goals, we included a 2 row accent that is in a contrasting color and outlined the patio in natural cobblestones and added a couple of large square bluestone pieces as the ‘walkway’ off of the patio.  The shape of the patio allows for them to reach their grill and outdoor dining area without having to step on dirt or lawn.  With a combination of the shape of the patio and the 2 accent rows, we were able to achieve an impressive looking patio from the kitchen as well as when you are on the patio.  The bluestone pieces help with the continuity of the landscaping as they have similar pieces by the entrances into their backyard.

Should an area of trees have uplighting?

Posted in Landscape Lights, Uncategorized, Winter Landscape at 6:37 AM by Administrator

We are often told that an area of mature trees is not very interesting and not worth uplighting.  After I ask a few additional questions and listen to their answers, we sometimes decide that we should setup a demonstration with temporary lights so that the homeowners can see what I envision.  Here is a picture of a cluster of trees that we did uplight and the homeowners love it.

Granite Bench and Cutting Garden

Posted in Pavers, Plants, Pruning, Uncategorized at 6:52 AM by Administrator

We created a cutting garden for this family who sells their cut flowers to the public and wants to promote having people cut their own flowers.  As a result of listening to their goals, we defined an area that is full of shrubs and perennials that make great cut flowers.  We have a wide variety of plants for people to choose from, thus if you want to cut flowers anytime from late April to late October, there should be some flowers for you to choose from.  We did include some evergreens as the family told us that people sometimes request evergreen branches be included in floral arrangements.  To help people stay on the paths, we formalized the paths with irregular shaped stones and installed a granite bench.
