Do I need to Replace the Footing to my Steps

Posted in Uncategorized at 7:11 AM by Administrator

We are often asked if the footing needs to be replaced when we are updating a set of masonry steps. The answer is ‘it depends’. If the footing is still level and structurally sound then you probably do not need to change the footing (if you had wood steps and are now changing to stone steps then the footing may not be adequate to support the weight of the stone steps, so it might need to be changed). We built a walkway and steps for an Andover family and listed the footing as optional in our proposal/contract because ‘the existing steps were not that bad’. But, after we removed the brick steps we were able to see the existing footing. Because the edges were damaged and the center of the footing was showing signs of deterioration, the homeowner and Artistic Landscapes agreed that it would be best to remove the footing and for us to build a new footing. As a result we removed the footing and found out that over the years the footing was ‘improved’ at different times. Parts of the footing were more than 16″ thick. We needed a jackhammer to breakup the old footing so that we could move it.

Serpentine Natural Stone Wall in Rowley

Posted in Masonry, Pavers, Plants, Uncategorized at 6:27 AM by Administrator

We designed and built this natural stone wall for a Rowley family as they wanted their gardens to be more accessible and enhance their backyard with a New England type stone wall. The serpentine design complemented the flow of the plants and remained consistent with the shape and flow of the other garden beds.

Do I need to install landscape lights into my stone wall?

Posted in Uncategorized at 6:38 AM by Administrator

We are often asked if the landscape lights need to be installed into a stone wall and we believe the answer is that “it depends”. Often times this conversation occurs while we are planning on how we are going to build the new stone wall and we still believe “it depends”. Because we are building the stone wall at the same time that we install the landscape lights, it is pretty easy for us to install the lights directly into the stonework but if the client does not want to provide a downlight effect on the stonework then the answer is that the lights should not be installed in the stonework. We then look at uplighting the stonework, as seen in the following picture, rather than casting the lighting across the stonework. When we uplight stonework then we will utilize more fixtures so that we can provide a consistent look. We will often cast light across the face of the stonework when the client does not want to draw attention to the stonework or their budget does not allow for so many lights during the first phase of the project. We believe all 3 methods work very well and the right decision is the one that provides the client with the look that they want.

Northeast Hardscape Expo

Posted in Uncategorized at 4:36 PM by Administrator

We had a great time attending the Northeast Hardscape Expo in the Providence, Rhode Island Convention Center. We met with many suppliers of tools (there are many speciality blades which we can utilize when we are cutting stone and porcelain) and stones. Tony attended three seminars including one on the use of porcelain pavers. It was fun listening to the seminar on porcelain pavers since most of our patio at last year’s Boston Flower & Garden show consisted of porcelain pavers and we won the Best Patio during that show.

Natural Stone Firepit in Danvers

Posted in Uncategorized at 7:08 AM by Administrator

This family has a pool and wanted to add to their backyard so that they would get more enjoyment and spend more time in their yard. After listening to our client, we designed a patio and natural stone firepit for them. As you will see in this picture, we built the wood burning firepit before we built the patio. We excavated for the firepit, installed crushed stone for drainage and support prior to pouring a concrete pad. The stones of the firepit all sit on this concrete pad. The center of the concrete pad has a drainage opening so that we do not collect rain, snow or other water within the firepit. The bricks that line the inside are all fire rated as is the mortar that was used to hold the bricks together.

Bluestone Patio and Natural Stone Wall around a Hot Tub

Posted in Masonry, Pavers, Uncategorized at 6:45 AM by Administrator

This Beverly family wanted a hot tub in the area below their deck but there was not enough head room for them to feel comfortable using the hot tub. Thus, this area was dug out and we built a bluestone patio under the deck so that they can easily access the hot tub without walking on the lawn or through plants. The patio is now a step below the adjacent lawn and plantings. We built the wall to allow for maximum patio space while contouring around the hot tub.

Georgetown Paver Patio

Posted in Masonry, Pavers, Uncategorized at 6:36 AM by Administrator

We designed and built this large patio with Unilock’s Treo style paver in the Steel Mountain color with an accent of Courtstone pavers.  This free flowing patio is large enough to provide a table area plus an area for a couch and other furniture so that this Georgetown family can comfortable entertain their friends regardless of how many people show up for a party. The Courtstone accent is set in from the perimeter so that we were able to achieve a decorative trim like appearance from these pavers.

Do I want Landscape Lights?

Posted in Uncategorized at 7:02 AM by Administrator

Many people have seen landscape lights on big homes or beautiful landscapes and say ‘wow, that is beautiful but I bet it is super expensive’. While professional lighting systems are not cheap, they provide excellent lighting and truly enhance all landscapes and we can make the front of your house as beautiful as those other homes that you have seen. There are different styles of lighting techniques that we can utilize to provide you with the look that you want while staying within your budget.

One of the best ways to see if you want us to design and install a landscape lighting system for you is to call or email us. After we talk with you, we will develop a plan and will set up the lights in your yard so that you can see the impact of the lights. All of the wires are above grade (you will see the wires on your lawn, mulch, etc.) as that allows us to move lights easily and turn some lights on/off so that you can decide for yourself whether or not you need all of the lights that we are looking at. After looking at this for a few days, you can make a decision and we will modify the design to makes sure that you get the look that you want while staying within your budget.
