Many people have found their trees have significant bark damage as areas of the bark high up on trees disappeared during the winter. Unfortunately racoons have done significant damage to many mature trees as they looked for new sources of food. This picture shows the damage (bark eaten) to a signifcant part of a Maple tree.
This tree will die over the next several years as these wounds will not heal themselves.

We installed cocoa bean shell mulch and it looks great. The shells are very light and crunchy (they are dried cocoa shells, after all) and smell like chocolate. It is a unique look that seems to work very nicely. Might be worth considering in pots and planters near a deck/patio, as well.

Today was our first day of performing Spring Clean-ups. Despite the rain, we had a successful first day of the season.
