Can a loose laid natural stone wall look good?

Most of the walls that we build are mortared (think concrete) walls so that all of the stones are bound together but we also build loose laid stone walls.  A loose laid stone wall is a wall that has each stone placed on the lower stones.  Each stone can be moved by hand (the stones might be too heavy for one person to actually move it, but in theory each stone can be moved).  We built this natural stone retaining wall for a Newburyport family and finished the top of the wall with a combination of low bush blueberries, groundcovers and annuals.  The area behind the stone wall was filled with crushed stone as the crushed stone provides great drainage.  The crushed stone is kept in place by the installation of landscape fabric.
