This mature Dogwood tree is illuminated by 3 bullet lights. By using three lights on this dogwood, we are able to showcase its bark and branch structure without creating big, bright areas. The more uniform lighting around the whole tree pleases this Georgetown family.

As many of you know, I have two Bernese Mountain Dogs and they often work with us. I was pruning a Japanese Maple the other day and one of my dogs did his best to help prune (cut the branch and break it into smaller pieces). It is fun to have their help.

We started some Spring pruning of plants that have not been pruned in many years, fruiting trees and to repair damage that occurred over the winter. This Viburnum is a very large shrub that is happy at its home in Georgetown. We were able to make some significant rejuvenation type pruning cuts and brought the shrub down from 11′ tall to 5′ tall in many areas. We left some stems at 11′ so that the family will be able to see some of the beautiful Viburnum flowers in a few weeks. This is the before and after look of this one mature Viburnum.

We are installing 11 of Unique Lighting System’s Tiki lights around a pool in Beverly. The lights are very tall (4′ or so) and have a great stake that should support the lights for years to come. Each light is secured to a 17″ stake. We compacted the ground around each stake to help keep each fixture plumb/straight. This picture shows the stake and post but does not show the top of the Tiki light as we were in the process of installing the light fixtures and connecting the wires.

We believe drip irrigation is the best way to provide water to plants thus we install drip irrigation zones almost always when we are creating new planting beds. Drip irrigation is not visible since the irrigation pipes are buried in the ground. There are a variety of techniques that we use to install drip irrigation as the layout of the pipes will be dependent on the plants that we are going to water. If there are trees and larger shrubs then we will always wrap the root areas with a few loops of irrigation pipe, except for plants that prefer to have dry soil while we may install straight lines when we are going to water perennials or vegetables. Regardless of technique, we always install tees in the pipes so that the water will flow in a multiple directions throughout the irrigation system. We believe this extra effort will minimize the impact on the plants if the irrigation pipes get clogged.

There are steep areas between some of the homes in Turner Hill Country Club in Ipswich. The homeowners had no access to their backyard or lower level except for going through the house. It was not ideal to have the personnel who came to service the AC units or perform other work for these families having to walk through the main party of the house just to get to the basement or backyard. To solve this issue, we installed large stepping stones around the plants so that people can have exterior access to the backyard and mechanical equipment.

This Reading family had a front lawn that sloped down towards the driveway and a failing retaining wall. After talking with us at the Boston Flower Show, we listened to what their goals were (to make some sort of wall that looks pretty) and gained an understanding of the type of wall that they liked. After these discussions, we designed and built a natural stone retaining wall that has minimal mortar showing on the face of the wall. We capped the walls with granite coping and prepared a small garden bed between the back of the stone wall and the lawn. These pictures show the difference between the walls that were existing and the walls that we built.

Many people are talking about creating a contemporary landscape as they like the look of the stonework in those settings. We have previously discussed utilizing Unilock’s U-Cara wall system to create a contemporary look and we will now discuss making a contemporary look with natural stones.
We are able to build your patio, walkway and driveway (not all of the natural stones can be used for your driveway) using a natural stone that will also serve as your retaining or decorative wall. There are many styles of marble and travertine that are cut to serve as tiles/pavers for your patio and walkway. The same slabs of marble and travertine are also cut into wall stone. These natural wall stones have different lengths but they are the same color as the tiles/paver. We think this can create a pretty contemporary look and will allow us to create a modern look utilizing all of the same style of stones and will allow us to add a decorative accent stone, if you want, within the wall as the sizes and look will be consistent.

Please let us know if you are interested in learning more about these natural stones as are excited by them and believe they will make some beautiful patios and driveways.
