Rebuilt stone steps in Ipswich

Posted in Masonry, Uncategorized, Winter Landscape at 6:50 AM by Administrator

This Ipswich family has a large set of steps that leads to their front door.  These steps had deteriorated substantially as the bluestone pieces were loose and stones were missing in the steps.  We were hired to repair the steps without rebuilding the entire set of steps as the cost to rebuild the steps was much more expensive.  We removed the stones from the deteriorated steps, removed the old mortar that was behind/under the stones and then rebuilt the steps with a combination of new stones and some of the existing stones.  As our goal was to make the repaired steps look similar to the steps that we did not touch, we added coloring to our mortar so that the mortar would look fairly close to the existing mortar.  This is how the repair looks after we were finished.

Can a loose laid natural stone wall look good?

Posted in Masonry, Plants, Pruning, Uncategorized, Winter Landscape at 6:42 AM by Administrator

Most of the walls that we build are mortared (think concrete) walls so that all of the stones are bound together but we also build loose laid stone walls.  A loose laid stone wall is a wall that has each stone placed on the lower stones.  Each stone can be moved by hand (the stones might be too heavy for one person to actually move it, but in theory each stone can be moved).  We built this natural stone retaining wall for a Newburyport family and finished the top of the wall with a combination of low bush blueberries, groundcovers and annuals.  The area behind the stone wall was filled with crushed stone as the crushed stone provides great drainage.  The crushed stone is kept in place by the installation of landscape fabric.

Landscape Lighting a Fence in Topsfield

Posted in Landscape Lights, Plants, Uncategorized, Winter Landscape at 6:53 AM by Administrator

As part of an extensive landscape lighting system in Topsfield, we were able to create a consistent and good feel to the 6′ tall fence that limits access to the lawn area.  The look of having 10 panels uplit with a light in the center of each panel has created the look that the owners’ wanted (and we like).

Ipswich family retaining wall

Posted in Masonry, Uncategorized, Winter Landscape at 6:48 AM by Administrator

We were able to rebuild an old natural stone wall in Ipswich without causing the steps to be damaged.  While we rebuilt the wall, we decided that the wall would look more interesting with having the curved section of wall meet the straight wall about 4 inches in from the corner so that there would be a reveal of our stonework.  We think this detail is important and makes the whole wall look much nicer.

Drainage around exterior of house for Ipswich family

Posted in Masonry, Plants, Uncategorized, Winter Landscape at 6:30 AM by Administrator

This Ipswich family was having an issue of water running down their driveway as well as their roof and ending up in their basement.  Because of their issue of getting water in the basement, they called us.  We installed a drainage system that includes 4″ perforated drainage pipes, an NDS collection drain, crushed stone and a dry well.  After our drainage system was installed, this family has stated that they no longer have any water entering their basement.

Landscape Lighting in Topsfield

Posted in Landscape Lights, Uncategorized, Winter Landscape at 6:48 AM by Administrator

We provided an extensive landscape lighting system to the party/function area of this estate in Topsfield.  These FX lights are dimmable.  Three transformers were strategically placed around the property to allow for the most efficient installation and to limit how much electricity was needed to source power to each fixture.

Landscape Lighting provide Christmas lighting in Newburyport

Posted in Landscape Lights, Plants, Uncategorized, Winter Landscape at 9:35 AM by Administrator

We installed a landscape lighting system for this Newburyport family as they wanted the curb appeal of coming home to their house with nice night lighting.  We installed FX lights that have color changing bulbs (ZDC lights).  Most of the year, the lights are similar to white lights but they do change the light colors on special occasions.  This is easily done because we created a theme for the Christmas colors and they can easily activate that theme.  This is what their home looked like.

FX Lighting – Manufacturing Facility

Posted in Landscape Lights, Uncategorized, Winter Landscape at 6:48 AM by Administrator

Tony toured the manufacturing facility of FX lighting last week.  It is an impressive site where the components are manufactured but not assembled into a final product until an order is received.  They custom build each light by assembling the various components to the exact order.  I was able to see the brass fixtures as well as the coated fixtures.  Here are a few pictures related to the FX lighting facility.

Patio adjacent to concrete deck

Posted in Masonry, Pavers, Uncategorized, Winter Landscape at 7:06 AM by Administrator

We expanded the patio around the pool for this Middleton, MA family by building a paver patio that is at the same height of the existing concrete pool patio.  The built-in pool has a concrete deck around it but there was an area between the concrete and the house that would get people’s feet dirty on their way to the pool.  That area was improved by having us build a paver patio right up to the edge of the concrete deck.  The area now provides for clean access to the pool and provides a good spot for the grill to be stored and used as it is away from everyone who is using the pool.
