Built in patio – day vs night

Posted in Landscape Lights, Masonry, Pavers, Uncategorized, Winter Landscape at 6:52 AM by Administrator

We designed and built this paver patio and stone wall for a North Andover family into their sloped backyard.  The stonewall was built with Estate style wallstones while the patio was built with Treo style pavers.  Both the wallstones and pavers were made by Unilock.  This additional seating area / private patio will have a portable firepit placed on it in the future.

As you can see from these two pictures, there is a dramatic difference to the look of a stone wall and patio when it is illuminated with the appropriate light fixtures.  For this family, we installed lights directly into the wall so that the perimeter of the patio would be illuminated and we installed one path light by the steps as a way to make the transition up/down the steps safer and easier.  Because our goal was not to create a spotlight effect in the patio, we installed ambient lighting on the back lawn and hill area so that the effect of light is throughout the yard and not just inside the patio.

We are very proud of achieving the Angie’s List Super Service Award for our efforts during 2016.  We have continued to focus on listening to our clients and helping our clients obtain the landscapes that achieve their goals.  As a result of this attention to our clients needs and our attention to details and workmanship, we have earned an Angie’s List Super Service Award every year since 2010.  Angie’s List states that less than 5% of companies are awarded a Super Service Award, thus I thank all of the Artistic Landscapes employees (especially Will, Jake & Kevin) for staying focused on each clients’ goals and doing a great job.

If you would like to see how we can help you, please either stop by our office on Route One in Rowley or call us at 978.948.2900.

Masonry Repair – Compliment

Posted in Masonry, Pavers, Uncategorized, Winter Landscape at 5:57 AM by Administrator

Artistic Landscapes was asked to repair a couple of old natural stone walls that had started to show their age.  These walls are next to the ocean and probably more than 50 years old.  Kevin (an Artistic Landscapes employee and a mason) made these repairs for this Beverly, MA homeowner by rebuilding sections of each wall with the goal of making it look like the repairs never occurred.  This was accomplished by ensuring the stones did not get scratched or marked during the process and that the new mortar that was visible was finished to look like the existing mortar.  As he was making these repairs, he noticed that the brick walkway had settled by the walls and steps, thus he took the initiative to rebuild the walkway so that it was flush with the top step.

As a result of Kevin’s efforts, the client provided the following feedback: “Kevin fixed a section of my old brick walkway very well.  I was surprised, but very pleased as to Kevin’s attention to detail.  Kevin picked out the moss that has grown between the bricks and placed it to the side.  He then fixed the bricks and planted the moss back between the bricks.  Great job and you can’t tell that he did anything as the whole area looks the same.

Natural Stone Retaining Walls, Reclaimed Steps and Patio

Posted in Landscape Lights, Masonry, Pavers, Uncategorized, Winter Landscape at 6:08 AM by Administrator

Artistic Landscapes enhanced the backyard for this Georgetown family by building a new set of steps that connects the driveway to the backyard and a new paver patio.  The steps and patio are supported by natural stone retaining walls.  These walls were built to look like an existing wall as the goal was to make this area look like it had already been built for 20 years.  As a result, we used solid reclaimed granite steps for each of the steps and by using this type of stone, we were able to achieve a classic look that is easy to walk up and down.  To ensure nighttime safety on the steps, we installed 4 lights directly into the stone wall as these lights provide sufficient light across the entire set of steps.

A sitting wall was added to help remove the grading concern as the ground sloped more than we wanted and this wall provides some additional seating and the background to some plantings.

The patio was built using Unilock’s new pavers called Westport.  We found these pavers to be very nice to work with and they provide the homeowner with the exact look that they wanted.

Radiant Snow Melting

Posted in Pavers, Uncategorized, Winter Landscape at 6:51 AM by Administrator

Jake Austin and Tony Hurley of Artistic Landscapes both completed training in Radiant Snow Melting that was provided by ProLine Radiant Heat Solutions.  This training has taught both of them the most effective process and design criteria in creating a radiant heating system that will melt snow and ice from on pavers.  One of these systems will result in decreased operating cost for a homeowner as plowing and shoveling will just be a memory as the radiant heating system will make it so there is no maintenance.

It is never too early to start planning and if you do not want to deal with ice or snow next winter, please contact either Jake or Tony at 978.948.2900 so that the planning can begin.

Waterfalls and Pond in Groveland

Posted in Landscape Lights, Masonry, Plants, Uncategorized, Winter Landscape at 6:20 AM by Administrator

We designed and built this pond with 4 waterfalls into the side of a hill in Groveland.  By choosing this location, the waterfalls are able to be seen from 1/4 mile away as there is a street directly lined up with the waterfalls as well as from the family room of their home.  We built the waterfalls and pond with stones and boulders and ‘planted’ some of their stones away from the waterfall path so that it helps the waterfall look more natural.  Landscape lights have been strategically located in and around the pond so that the flow of water is visible even at night.  During 2016, we expect to plant around the waterfalls and pond as well as inside the pond.  Fish will begin making this pond their home later this Spring.

Should an area of trees have uplighting?

Posted in Landscape Lights, Uncategorized, Winter Landscape at 6:37 AM by Administrator

We are often told that an area of mature trees is not very interesting and not worth uplighting.  After I ask a few additional questions and listen to their answers, we sometimes decide that we should setup a demonstration with temporary lights so that the homeowners can see what I envision.  Here is a picture of a cluster of trees that we did uplight and the homeowners love it.

Landscape Lights for the whole front of a property in Middleton

Posted in Landscape Lights, Uncategorized, Winter Landscape at 6:55 AM by Administrator

Similar to the Lynnfield family that we showed you last week, this client also wanted to create focal points and provide a dramatic flair of the front of their Middleton property.  As such, we created a lighting system that includes uplighting most of the trees including installing lights on the house so that we could get more of the foliage of a mature tree and installing a light about 15′ up another tree so that we could have light all the way to the top of the Birch clump, we also installed lights on the house itself so that we could uplight the columns by the front door and the stonework above the garage doors.  By combining these various lighting methods along with other light fixtures and locations, we were able to provide the dramatic flair that this family wanted.

Our office in Rowley

Posted in Landscape Lights, Masonry, Pavers, Plants, Pruning, Uncategorized, Winter Landscape at 7:02 AM by Administrator

We look forward to helping you with your landscaping needs now that we are finished with the construction of our building and have most of our stonework done (we will be adding more displays in 2016).  We are often asked about our process and if it is too early to start planning a project.  Our process is that we will meet with you at your home or at the property location if this is a commercial project and we will ask questions about what your goals are and what you like or dislike about certain items.  After carefully listening, we will get back with you and provide you with our detailed proposal.  Some tweaks may be required after that meeting and you are invited to our office and see the exact stones or lights that we may had suggested in our proposal.  Once you have time to think about everything then we sign the contract and we will normally begin the project about 2 months after that date.

We have our paver parking spaces and paver walkway complete along with our landscape lighting system.

Landscape Lights throughout the whole yard in Lynnfield

Posted in Landscape Lights, Plants, Uncategorized, Winter Landscape at 6:50 AM by Administrator

Our goal was to create focal points and provide a dramatic sense of depth to this Lynnfield property.  As such, we created a lighting system that includes lights in the distance (uplighting the mature evergreens on the far side of the property and to the left of the driveway), uplighting trees that are in the lawn area as well as uplighting the front of the house.  By combining these various items, we were able to provide the sense of depth that this family wanted.
