Retaining Walls
A natural stone retaining wall can revitalize your yard. A natural stone retaining wall becomes a beautiful focal point and allows your yard to have more usable area. A wall can be built without visible mortar.
Artistic Landscapes of Rowley, MA builds natural stone and segmental retaining walls throughout the North Shore region of Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire. We build most natural stone retaining walls with mortar and then rake back the mortar from the wall front to give the appearance of a dry stack - a traditional old New England style. We find this attention to detail pleasing to many clients as the wall has a finished look. If you are looking to match an existing wall, we can do that as well. We listen to each clients’ goals before designing and recommending the height and style of your retaining wall. We may recommend a retaining wall that doubles as a sitting wall or your property may lend itself to creating a planting bed between two walls to address a steep grade.
We believe all retaining walls need a base of ¾” crushed stone, followed by a drainage area behind the wall and more ¾” crushed stone. We install a layer of landscape fabric between the existing soil and the drainage area so the crushed stone provides drainage for years to come. As a final measure, we install a perforated drainage pipe to collect any water that does not drain quick enough and provides a safe drain for the wall. Our segmental retaining walls are typically built with wall stones manufactured by Unilock or Techo-Bloc.
Walls can be capped with granite, bluestone, limestone or the same stones used to build your wall.
