Backyard Patio and Stone Wall in Ipswich

This Ipswich family had an open backyard that was sloped away from the house and difficult to have a table set on the lawn. Artistic Landscapes LLC designed and built them a patio with a sitting wall. We built the natural stone wall to alleviate the slope from the yard and to provide additional seating. In our goal to be consistent, we capped the wall and built steps to the patio with gray granite. The main section of the patio includes all three sizes of Techo-Bloc's Everest pavers while the accent around the perimeter was built with three rows of Unilock's Copthorne pavers. The base beneath the patio and natural stone wall is supported with 20 tons of open graded stone.
The step area was enhanced with the tiered wall adjacent to the steps. The goal of tiering the stonework was to provide subtle definition of where the entrance is to the patio and to provide a greater sense of depth when looking at the patio from inside the house.
As part of the design process, we took into account the hill/slope and decided that building a wall and setting the patio in the lower section of the yard would provide this family with the most flexibility. The lawn area between the house and the patio is fairly flat so they can use this area for almost anything including a swingset.
