What to do with overgrown rhododendrons?

We are often asked ‘is there anything I can do with these overgrown rhododendrons’. If you think, I need to rip out those overgrown rhododendrons, you might be right but you can also prune them back into shape. Rhododendrons that are blocking your windows may be a problem but you have options.
During 2019, we reduced the size of many overgrown rhododendrons that were blocking some windows by pruning them extensively. We decided where to prune based on each plant. By that I mean, we made some pruning cuts about 2’ above the grade while other cuts were done at 3’ or even 4’ above grade. The cuts were made so that we would keep some of the green leaves on the plant and so that we will have clean cuts at branch intersections. The following pictures show what an overgrown rhododendron looked like when we showed up and how it looks like after we pruned.
Most of our extensive pruning of overgrown rhododendrons wasdone before June 15th so we expect all of those rhododendrons toflower next year. This rhododendron was pruned on July 29th. Becauseof the timing of the pruning, we expect the foliage to continue to grow but wedo not expect this plant to be full of flowers next Spring.
